Thursday Thirteen - 2nd Edition

Thirteen Things about Chablis

1. The last Thursday Thirteen that I participated in was in August. I promptly forgot about it apparently.
2. Obviously I have a short memory.
3. Thankfully I’ve since found a To-Do list solution online that sends me reminders.
4. Now, if I could only remember to post my To-Do list there I’d be all set ;)
5. Although I have a terrible memory for tasks, I have a wonderful memory for voices and unimportant facts.
6. I am a veritable fountain of useless trivia, but don’t ask what I had for breakfast this morning because I don’t remember.
7. I do my best work and thinking under pressure. The more extreme, the better.
8. I’m also like a dog with a bone when I’m involved with a task. I don’t stop until I finish and absolutely HATE interruptions.
9. I’ve reconnected with 4 friends from high school this week through MySpace. When I found one in particular, I cried.
10. I RARELY cry.
11. Since I rarely cry, I get all of the unpleasant tasks put on my shoulders, like breaking bad news to people and speaking at funerals, which I also did this week.
12. I had been to more funerals by the time I was 21 than most people have by their 50’s.
13. I have two real phobias: dead bodies and flying.

What Your Bathroom Habits Say About You

You are a giving soul. Way too giving in fact. You often get stuck doing the dirty work that no one else will do.

Your idea of fashion is jeans and a t-shirt. Clean, if you’re lucky.

You are a very outgoing person. You are true to yourself, and you never hold back.

In relationships, you tend to take care of your needs first. You can only be with someone who’s as independent as you are.

What Do Your Bathroom Habits Say About You?

The little graphic that goes along with this quiz cracks my ass up. When I was longing for a laptop, I used to joke that the first thing I’d do when I got one was IRC from the bathroom. I finally got a laptop and that is exactly what I did. My IRC friends are forever grateful that I don’t have a webcam on that particular computer hehe.

Book Meme

After seeing Lisa and Elisson doing the book meme, I figured I’d jump on the train too:

A book that changed my life:
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families by Stephen Covey. Yes, really. A mentor of mine turned me onto this when it first came out and it literally changed my life. Trying to balance work, school, marriage (I was married and a foster parenting also at the time), parenting was difficult for me in the beginning. I was juggling so many balls in the air that I barely had time to read the damn book, but I did and my life was better for it.

A book I’ve read more than once:
There’s too many to list here, but many have come from The Dragonlance series by various authors. My friend J handed me the first book when I was 16 or so and we’ve been hooked ever since. At last count, there are over 100 books in this series I think, but I’ve re-read the first 4 books several times over. I love Tolkien’s Middle Earth, but the world of Krynn is my fantasy home.

A book I would take with me if I were stuck on a desert island:
I’m going to cheat a little here and say The Iliad and Odyssey boxed set. I read these in college, or rather, I cheated and read the Cliff Notes in college…it would be nice to have NOTHING else to do but read the originals.

A book that made me laugh:
The Harry Potter books by J.K. Rowling. So sue me…I absolutely LOVE these books. I’ll read almost anything you put in front of me, but I prefer pure escapist fiction every time. When I read for enjoyment, I don’t want to have to THINK.

A book that made me cry:
The last book to make me cry was Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World’s Worst Dog by John Grogan. I will also admit to crying at the end of the last Harry Potter book when Dumbledore died. Shut up.

A book that I wish had been written:
The book Rob was working on. He turned me onto many books that I probably would have never read otherwise and I’ve enjoyed every single one so far. I know that I would have read, and loved, anything that he had written.

A book I wish had never been written:
I can’t think of any really.

I’m currently reading:
On my nightstand is a stack of books that I choose from each night, depending on what I’m in the mood for.

Flight: My Life in Mission Control by Chris Kraft - a memoir written by NASA’s first Flight Director. I just started this last night and it’s excellent.

Back to the Moon by Homer H. Hickam, Jr. - By the author of the book Rocket Boys, which was the inspiration for the movie October Sky. I picked this up at the used bookstore down the street because the plot is ludicrous and the description made me laugh. I just can’t resist a book that says, “The Shuttle is Highjacked, Now the Countdown to Adventure Begins…” Surprisingly, it’s not as lame as it sounds and the technical details are excellent, if you’re into that sort of stuff.

A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin. Fantasy novels are, more often than not, terribly formulaic. I’ve never read a fantasy series that broke the mold that Tolkien created with Lord of the Rings…until now. I’m only about 3 chapters into the first book in the trilogy and already there’s more subplots than I can keep up with. It’s a refreshing change so far.

A Breath of Snow and Ashes by Diana Gabaldon. I hate romance novels and chick-lit with an unending passion. So it was with a lot of apprehension that I picked up the first novel in The Outlander series. If fantasy novels are formulaic, romance novels are formulaic AND predictable. The first book had just enough elements of the fantasy genre (a little magical time travel, a whole lotta sword-rattling) to hook me and the characters and historical backdrop kept me hooked through novels that average around 900 pages each. A Breath of Snow and Ashes is book 6 (in a 7 book series) and is the best so far IMHO.

A book I’ve been meaning to read:
The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway. Rob urged me to read this last year and I told him I’d read it during my Christmas break. He got all pissey and demanded I wait until summer. Well, Chief, summer is almost over and I’ve forgotten all about it until now. Maybe next summer.

What turned me onto fiction?
One word: Escape. I am every movie producer and author’s dream in that I can easily and willingly suspend belief in order to enjoy a story that allows me to escape the monotony of real life.

Thirteen Things about Me

1. Since this is my first week participating, I’ll start with the basics. I’m 36 years old.
2. I have two gorgeous boys, ages 12 and 9.
3. We live in the northeast, in a beautiful little town straight out of a Currier and Ives scene.
4. I’m single. Sort of. I guess. Maybe.
5. I’m self-employed and work from my home office as an investment property administrator.
6. I am pursuing a dual Bachelors degree in Information Sciences and have recently decided to pursue a Masters degree in Library and Information Sciences.
7. I volunteer at our local library several afternoons a week and I would happily do more if the library was open more often.
8. I suffered a slight existential crisis this week when I realized that I have never suffered an existential crisis in my life. Apparently it’s a prerequisite to being human. Who knew?
9. Motherhood was never a consideration for me until I saw that + sign.
10. Despite recent popular opinion to the contrary, I am perfectly capable of empathy. I’ll be more than happy to let you sit there and wallow in self-pity for a few hours…maybe even a few days. But then I wanna know what YOU are going to do to FIX it so you can move on.
11. I am loyal, to a fault. Beyond reason, comprehension or good common sense sometimes, but there you have it.
12. I am slow to fall in love and quick to fall out of love. My best defense mechanism when dealing with matters of the heart is that I can shut my feelings off at the drop of a hat. This isn’t a good thing, but it’s me. Deal with it.
13. You know that little voice inside all women that usually says things like “Your ass is too fat” or “Am I a good enough (person, woman, mother, etc)?”. Yeah. My mother taught me to beat that bitch into submission when I was 5. It’s the BEST gift a mother can give a daughter.

Wow

Your Birthdate: July 13

You’re dominant and powerful. You always need to be in charge.
While others respect your competence, you can be a bit of a dictator.
Hard working and serious, you never let yourself down.
You are exact and accurate - and you expect others to be the same way.

Your strength: You always get the job done

Your weakness: You’re a perfectionist to a fault

Your power color: Gray

Your power symbol: Checkmark

Your power month: April

Overall, it’s kind of accurate but what tickles me is that the color gray and the month of April hold enough special significance to me that it gave me goosebumps when I saw the results. That’s some spooky shit!

I’m a single parent, so it’s a toss-up between more time or more money.

Favorite lyrics?
My favorite lyrics change as often as I change my underwear. Reconnecting with an old friend has brought a lot of long-forgotten memories to the surface and something that I heard recently that has a current special meaning to me is an old song by Skid Row:

I Remember You

Woke up to the sound of pouring rain
The wind would whisper and I’d think of you
And all the tears you cried, that called my name
And when you needed me I came through

I paint a picture of the days gone by
When love went blind and you would make me see
I’d stare a lifetime into your eyes
So that I knew you were there for me
Time after time you were there for me

Remember yesterday - walking hand in hand
Love letters in the sand - I remember you
Through the sleepless nights and every endless day
I’d wanna hear you say - I remember you

We spent the summer with the top rolled down
Wished ever after would be like this
You said ‘I love you babe’, without a sound
I said I’d give my life for just one kiss
I’d live for your smile and die for your kiss

Remember yesterday - walking hand in hand
Love letters in the sand - I remember you
Through the sleepless nights and every endless day
I’d wanna hear you say - I remember you

We’ve had our share of hard times
But that’s the price we paid
And through it all we kept the promise that we made
I swear you’ll never be lonely

Woke up to the sound of pouring rain
Washed away a dream of you
But nothing else could ever take you away
’cause you’ll always be my dream come true
Oh my darling, I love you

Remember yesterday - walking hand in hand
Love letters in the sand - I remember you
Through the sleepless nights and every endless day
I’d wanna hear you say - I remember you
