Holiday Meme

1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate?
Don’t make me choose! Egg nog must have brandy in it and hot chocolate must have a candy cane melted in it. No exceptions!

2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree?
Santa waits until the last possible fucking minute to wrap presents and usually gets less than 3 hours of sleep on Xmas. Santa swears every year that THIS year will be different, yet it never is.

3. Colored lights on tree/house or white?
White on the house, white and/or colored on the tree. Depends on my mood.

4. Do you hang mistletoe?
I don’t hang mistletoe because I have no one to smooch underneath it.

5. When do you put your decorations up?
Usually Thanksgiving weekend if we’re doing an artificial tree. For real trees, we wait until the 2nd weekend in December.

6. What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)?
Christmas dinner is usually just a replay of Thanksgiving, except with a ham instead of turkey. My favorite dishes are the side dishes, which include sweet potatoes, stuffing, baked macaroni and cheese, among others.

7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child?
The first Christmas I spent with my brother. My father was married before he married my mother and had 3 children. I’m not close with the other two kids, but I worshipped the ground my brother walked on.

8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa?
I don’t remember when I learned the truth…I think I just simply ‘grew out of it’. It certainly wasn’t a huge deal like most other people think it was. My oldest son doesn’t believe in Santa anymore, but he’s helping me keep the secret from my youngest son. I expect he’ll figure it out sooner rather than later.

9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve?
We sometimes did when I was a child, but I’m a horrible and mean mother and make my kids wait until Xmas morning.

10. What kind of cookies does Santa get set out for him?
Santa gets whatever we feel like leaving for him. Usually it’s the typical homemade sugar cookies that we’ve spent all damn afternoon making. We also leave carrots for the reindeer.

11. Snow! Love it or Dread it?
Love it…until December 26, after which time, it can go the fuck away.

12. Can you ice skate?
Yes. I used to be able to skate fairly well but it’s been quite a few years.

13. Do you remember your favorite gift?
Yes. One year, my aunt (who nicknamed me Doodlebug) gave me a beautiful gold watch/necklace in the shape of a ladybug. I had that until my house burned down and it’s one of the few pieces of jewelry that I’ve ever mourned losing.

14. What’s the most important thing about the Holidays for you?
Trying to make sure that my kids don’t fall victim to the commercialization of it all. I limit them to a few gifts each…not the piles of gifts that a lot of kids demand these days.

15. What is your favorite Holiday Dessert?
I’m an apple pie kinda gal.

16. What is your favorite holiday tradition?
Spending the day putting together the toys and kicking my childrens’ asses at their new video games.

17. What tops your tree?
A porcelain angel. The running joke in my family is that the angel is entirely too large for the top of the tree. She looks like a vulture sitting up there, but we love her.

18. Which do you prefer Giving or Receiving?
It must be the giving. Although, one of the best parts of single motherhood is buying your own Christmas gifts for the kids to give to you. I’m never disappointed LOL.

19. What is your favorite Christmas Carol?
It changes from year to year I think and is heavily influenced by whatever carols they are teaching in music classes at school. This year, my youngest has been singing “I Ain’t Getting Nuttin’ For Xmas” non-stop and it’s been stuck in my brain for weeks now.

20. Candy Canes! Yuck or Yum?
Yuuuuummmmmmy!

Quirks

Quirks. Everyone has them, right? Some are cute and endearing…some just make you say “What the fuck?”. So here’s my attempt to start the next world wide web meme: List the ways in which you are just a little bit ‘touched in the head’.

Here’s mine:

    1. I am very fussy about my java. I simply can NOT drink coffee out of a white ceramic mug…I swear, it tastes ‘different’. The mug has to have a dark inside. I MUST have half and half…not milk. My motto: Life is too short to drink bad coffee.
    2. I willingly get up at 4am every single day. I need a few hours of peace and quiet before I can face the world…or my children.
    3. I can’t see the point of spending $10.00 on one pair of underwear, yet think nothing of spending obscene amounts of money on computer parts or books.
    4. I am a woman born without the cleaning gene. I don’t ever feel the need to clean…I usually smell it first. I DO clean, quite often in fact, but it’s not a biological imperative like it is for most women.
    5. I am fascinated with planes of all shapes and sizes. Just don’t ask me to actually board one. I’ve flown twice when I was a preteen, but since gaining a sense of my own mortality, I’ve had a very pronounced fear of flying.
    6. I am thoroughly convinced that I will win the lottery. I never actually play, mind you, but I WILL win.
    7. I talk to myself all the time. That woman you saw in the car last week who looked like she was singing along to music was probably me, talking to my invisible friend. I also answer my own questions. Yes, I DO find that a little scary.

I’m not going to tag anyone but would love trackbacks to your posts if you decide to fess up and display your craziness for all the world to see.

Hopping On the Meme Train

Stolen from the illustrious and batshit CRAZYLivey:

What were three of the stupidest things you have done in your life?
In no order of importance:
1. Skipped school with friends when I was about 13 years old and we accidentally set fire to 3 acres of land.
2. Started smoking.
3. Didn’t go to college when I should have.

At the current moment, who has the most influence in your life?
My kids. Everything I do…everything I am is for them.

If you were given a time machine that functioned, and you were allowed to only pick up to five people to dine with, who would you pick?
1. My mother: Now that I am a mother, I can truly appreciate what she must have gone through raising me. I’d give anything to tell her that I get it now.
2. My father: He died when I was 12 and I find that my memories of him are difficult to conjure up as I get older.
3. A friend long gone, but never forgotten.
4. Another friend who is still around. On my way back through time, I’d drop him off at the crossroads of his life so that he could make a different decision and follow his dream.
5. My paternal grandfather that I never got to meet.

If you had three wishes that were not supernatural, what would they be?
1. Wisdom
2. Money
3. Power

Hey…at least I’m HONEST.

Name two things you regret your city not having, and two things people should avoid.
I wish my town had a place to get a GOOD pizza (our current pizza place SUCKS) and a better main street area with tons of little shops to explore.
The two places people should avoid are the aforementioned pizza place and DVD rental place.

Name one thing that has changed your life.
Yeah, having kids is probably at the top of my list, but the death of a friend when we were 19 really woke me up to my own mortality…even moreso than the deaths of my parents.

Tag five people.
Whoever wants to play can have at it but I’m not going to force anyone.

I Loves Me Some Drunken Scotsmen

William Wallace
You scored 70 Wisdom, 77 Tactics, 62 Guts, and 53 Ruthlessness!
Like William Wallace, chances are you have no problem charging a
larger, better trained, better equipped, better armed and armored
English army with a band of naked drunken Scotsmen. I’m not contesting
that you have balls. It’s your brain function I’m worried about.

Scottish soldier and national hero. The first historical record of
Wallace’s activities concerns the burning of Lanark by Wallace and 30
men in May, 1297, and the slaying of the English sheriff, one of those
whom Edward I of England had installed in his attempt to make good his
claim to overlordship of Scotland. After the burning of Lanark many
joined Wallace’s forces, and under his leadership a disciplined army
was evolved. Wallace marched on Scone and met an English force of more
than 50,000 before Stirling Castle in Sept., 1297. The English, trying
to cross a narrow bridge over the Forth River, were killed as they
crossed, and their army was routed. Wallace crossed the border and laid
waste several counties in the North of England. In December he returned
to Scotland and for a short time acted as guardian of the realm for the
imprisoned king, John de Baliol . In July, 1298, Edward defeated
Wallace and his army at Falkirk, and forced him to retreat northward.
His prestige lost, Wallace went to France in 1299 to seek the aid of
King Philip IV, and he possibly went on to Rome. He is heard of again
fighting in Scotland in 1304, but there was a price on his head, and in
1305 he was captured by Sir John de Menteith. He was taken to London in
Aug., 1305, declared guilty of treason, and executed. The best-known
source for the life of Wallace is a long romantic poem attributed to
Blind Harry, written in the 15th century.

Book Meme

1. Number of books you have owned:
Over the years? Thousands. More than any sane person should ever own. Thankfully I have a new/used bookstore that I frequent for all of my paperback novels that I read but don’t want to necessarily keep. Since I live a fairly mobile lifestyle and don’t own a house, I only keep books that I will read many times over or ones that I want to save for the boys. I also score major amounts of books at yardsales this summer that I’ll trade in after I go through and keep what I like.
I buy the boys obscene numbers of books because they know that, although I usually always say no to toys, I’ll never deny them books.

2. Last book I bought:
I had to buy my textbooks for the two classes I’m taking this term, which include such exciting titles as “Programming Logic and Design”, “Sam’s Teach Yourself Programming in 24 Hours”, and “Foundations of Management”.

3. Last book I completed:
The last book I completed was “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” by J.K. Rowling. Unfortunately, it was the only book I had time to read this summer, which is surprising since I read the damn thing in one 18 hour marathon session.

4. Five books that mean a lot to me:
~”Lord of the Rings” by J.R.R. Tolkein: I didn’t read these books until high school when I fell into a group of friends who played Dungeons and Dragons with disturbing faithfulness. Yeah, I was a huge geek even back then, but hadn’t realized it yet. I’ve read the trilogy many times over the years and, yes, was first in line with that same group of friends when the movies each came to our town.
~”Dragonlance” by various authors: This is a massive series of fantasy books (100+ the last time I checked) in the same vein as Tolkein and was the setting used for many of our Dungeons and Dragons games. They are all set in a world named Krynn and include all of your usual elves, orcs, dragons and halflings…plus a few surprises. Don’t expect any of these books to be on par with Tolkein, because they’re not even close. However, it’s a great series in it’s own right without the flowery writing that scares off many would-be Tolkein readers AND it satisfies the desire for more stories and adventure. I love Middle Earth, but my heart lies in the world of Krynn.
~”The d’Artagnan Romances” by Alexandre Dumas: Otherwise known as The Three Musketeers books, these are just wonderful books that I got into in my early 20’s. I recommend the Oxford World Classics versions of all 6 books, that aren’t dumbed down to the lowest common denominator.
~The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling: Yeah, I don’t know what the fuck either. The publishers must line those pages with crack or something because I don’t think I have ever uttered a girlish squeal IN MY LIFE like I do when I get my hands on each new book. I sure as hell have NEVER stayed up reading for 36 straight hours like I did with The Order of the Phoenix and The Goblet of Fire. I don’t know what it is about these books, but I’ve been hooked since the first one.
~The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon: I rarely get into romance fiction, but this series is more historical fiction than anything else. I don’t even know where to start describing the books, but the series centers on a 20th century woman who goes back in time to 17th century Scotland. There’s lots of mystery and intrique and romance woven around historical details. And the books are THICK…averaging around 900 pages I’d guess…which is one of the things I look for. When I read a book, I want the WHOLE story.

5. What are you currently reading?
I’ve got 3 books going at the moment, in a desperate effort to finish them before classes start. I’m re-reading one of the Outlander series in preparation for the new book coming out this month. I’ve also (stupidly) started the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan, that I’ve been wanting to sink my teeth into for a while. The third book that I’m reading is called Eragon by Christopher Paolini. It’s the first book in a fantasy series started when the author was only 17 years old. So far, it’s not really grabbing me…where most fantasy stories understandably rip-off from Tolkein, this one rips off from EVERYONE as far as I can see. I’ve read a lot of fantasy literature and reading Eragon is like reading all of the popular series all rolled into one. Sometimes I’ll be reading along and wonder when the hell I switched books. I’m hoping his writing has matured over the past 3 years.

I’ve got a huge reading list that I’m hoping to get through this winter. I’ve got some classic books that I’ve always wanted to read, but keep getting distracted from by new and shiny stuff. I hope this winter is slow.

The Classic Dames Test

OKCupid! The Classic Dames Test

Barbara Stanwyck
You scored 30% grit, 14% wit, 42% flair, and 26% class!
You’re a tough dame, a bit of a spitfire, and you can even be a little
dangerous, but you do it with such flair that almost all is forgiven
(and even when it’s not, you’re still the most interesting woman in the
room). You can be witty and charming, all right, but you have a tough
streak that keeps you focused and sometimes deadly. You’ve had quite a
climb to get where you are, but you’re a hard worker and you mostly
deserve all you get…and then some. You might end up destroying
everything around you, but you must admit…you’ve got style. Your
leading men include Henry Fonda, Fred MacMurray, and when you forget
yourself, Gary Cooper.
