Be Very Scared

I’m hoping that the email I just received from my Astronomy professor from last term is a joke. A very bad, very silly joke. I’m more than a little worried that an actual astronomer could look at the picture below for longer than the 5 seconds it took me to realize that there’s something very wrong.

This is the sunset at the North Pole with the moon at its closest point. And, you also see the sun below the moon. An amazing photo and not one easily duplicated. You may want to save this and pass on to others.

North Pole?

This is NOT a picture taken of a sunset at the North Pole. How do I know? Because by Week 2 of that astronomy class, I had learned about ‘angular size’. The short explanation is that angular size is how astronomers measure the size of a celestial object, in this case the Sun and Moon. We know that if you were to place the two side by side, the Moon is much smaller than the Sun. But because the Moon is closer to Earth than the Sun, they both look to be about the same size.

This is a very basic concept in Astronomy and I’m more than a little worried about exactly what the atrocious amount of tuition I’m paying is being spent on.

Oh the Huge Manatee

It’s 3:30am. Do you know where your pain meds are?

I’ve got one rockin toothache and do you think I can find any good meds in the house? Oh hell, no. It’s all Children’s Tylenol, Dimetapp and Pepto Bismal in my medicine cabinet. I’d kill for some Tylenol PM right now. In desperation, I chewed 8 Children’s Tylenol (why, yes, that DID feel wonderful with an aching tooth) and I’m chasing it with the only booze in the house: Parrot Bay Rum. (Be ye warned: the pirate talk should commence any second now).

Sometimes living on the ’straight and narrow’ just doesn’t pay, ya know? I ditched all my druggie friends years ago. I’m beginning to see the error of my ways.

Update 9:06am: I called my dentist at 8 (he only works weekends…how lucky am I?). He’ll call me this afternoon if it looks like he can fit me in at the end of the day, but I definitely have an appointment for tomorrow morning. He suggested 2 tylenol and 2 advil every 5 hours with LOTS of water. I asked if rum would do but he said no. Damn it.

In a Pinch

Aaaaaar! Captain Jack Sparrow be no Jack Bauer…

Jack Bauer

But he’ll do in a pinch.

Captain Jack Sparrow

I took t’ sprogs t’ see Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man’s Chest last night. I had read a few o’ t’ early reviews and people seemed t’ be split starboard down t’ middle. Some felt it was ‘too long’ and ‘t’ movie (and Johnny Depp) tried too hard’, while others had nothin’ but good thin’s t’ say. I gotta tell ya though: this be a Disney flick…not somethin’ I’m goin’ t’ take seriously anyways.

I rarely go t’ t’ movies at all t’ begin with. In t’ last 10 years, I’ve seen only 9 movies in t’ theater because I hate t’ whole experience now. Outrageous ticket prices, outrageous food prices and obnoxious sprogs have all conspired t’ turn me completely off. Even when thar be a movie that I want t’ see when it first hits theaters, I still DREAD t’ experience. I had to pillage and plunder close t’ 50 doubloons last night when all was said and done, but it was SO worth it.

Johnny Depp was amazin’, as usual. There be few actors that can make me forget that they’re actin’ but he be one o’ them. I made it a point not t’ read any spoilers for this movie and it was worth t’ wait. Although t’ movie be nothin’ more than a mindless good time from beginnin’ t’ end, t’ emotional surprises still had a good punch t’ them. Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley be still lusty wenches, too pretty for their own good, but both gave solid performances.

Git yourselves t’ a theater, smartly, lads and lassies!

(P.S.: Yaaaaar! I do expect t’ be speakin’ like this’ for days. Landlubbers!)

Independence Day

flag

Oh, say can you see, by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, now conceals, now discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines on the stream:
‘Tis the star-spangled banner! O long may it wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wiped out their foul footstep’s pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war’s desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, for our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.”
And the star-spangled banner forever shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Learn it. Live it. Love it.

Thought for the Day

Hmmm. I wonder how many people realize that those anonymous proxy servers don’t REALLY make one an anonymous web surfer?

If I wanted to ban someone from my website, there would be nothing the little darling could do to get around it. Don’t insult my intelligence.

Update 13:30PM: It is truly sad to see the lengths some people will go to for attention.

A Special Request

The next time you drama queens wanna pick a blog fight, could you hold off until a weekday?

The ol’ hit counters aren’t spinning fast enough to make this whole thing worthwhile. Everybody knows that you never create controversy on the weekends.

Amateurs.

Random Thoughts on a Sunday Morn

Every once in a while, I awake to a perfect day and think to myself, “Self, you really should take some time to smell the roses…listen to the birds sing…watch the butterflies dance in the sunlight”. Then my real self wakes up and growls, “Fuck you. Where’s my god-damn coffee?”.

Sometimes I find myself wanting to believe the best of someone despite all evidence to the contrary. It never takes me long to see the light once it’s been turned on though.

I’m a true believer in the power of love and the ability of “I’m sorry” to fix most all trespasses.

I don’t go out of my way to fuck with someone, just for the sheer joy of it. Don’t rattle my cage and I won’t rattle yours. Unfortunately, the world is apparently full of people who don’t live by those same rules.

The path to being a self-aware, emotionally healthy human being is only found by those who have travelled Take-Responsibility-for-Your-Actions Road and I’ll-Never-Do-That-Again Boulevard.

Watching someone I care about make bad choices seriously calls into question my very FIRM belief of “Live and Let Live”.

Cinnamon buns are a gift from the gods.

Joy can be found anywhere you CHOOSE to look for it…after coffee.

Just for You

Lest I destroy Livey’s belief that she truly IS the center of the universe and that no one…and I mean NO ONE has suffered as much as she has, I have gone in and fished out a comment that the spam filter ate. Here ya go, sweetie. I even gave it a post unto itself.

Unfortunately I gave you far more credit than you deserve in the intelligence department. Sorry for that. I’m done, you wanna keep showing your ass, go right ahead. I want no part of it.

Let it never be said that I have no sympathy for the mentally ill.
